LSU’s Lane Kiffin is once again in the headlines, this time about to make history in the most bizarre way possible.
Following a groundbreaking NCAA eligibility update, Cleveland Browns tight end Dae’Quan Wright is on the verge of returning to the college ranks. He already has an agreement in place with LSU for the 2026 season—if he can clear waivers.
In a never-before-seen move, the Browns have already waived Wright. If everything falls into place, the tight end will be back in Baton Rouge just in time for LSU’s season opener against Clemson.
“Wright is believed to be the first player to have an agreement to return to play in college after signing with an NFL team as an undrafted free agent. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles after the draft and then was claimed on waivers by the Browns on Aug. 11,” ESPN’s staff writes.

Wright didn’t see action in either of Cleveland’s first two preseason games. After sitting out the opener, he dressed against the Bills on Saturday but stayed on the sideline due to an injury. He hasn’t practiced with the Browns in a week.
On Wednesday, Wright officially entered the transfer portal after a group of athletes granted a temporary restraining order in a Louisiana court gained clearance to play one more college season.
Browns head coach Todd Monken appeared just as baffled by the circus as everyone else.
“Man, isn’t this s— crazy?” Monken said when asked about Wright’s situation Saturday . “I don’t even know what to say.”
He was initially confused about Kiffin reaching out to him, but then realised what it was for.
“I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out to me a week ago; now I know. I didn’t call him back, I guess I should have.”
Kiffin Defends Wright’s Possible Return to LSU

At the center of it all, Kiffin defended Wright’s possible return, saying the players shouldn’t have to pay for someone else’s decisions and rulings.
“Because of the rulings, they are going to play for you or someone else. We made the decision to recruit them. It’s wrong to be critical of these kids. They were granted a fifth year and a judge said they were wronged,” Kiffin said via Ross Dellenger from Yahoo Sports .
“These players should have been told that they were going to be eligible for a fifth year. Had they known that, they would have stayed (and not signed pro contracts). You may end up having hundreds of athletes told they have a fifth year. It’s a unique circumstance.”
Wright was one of the few standout players who followed Kiffin to LSU from Ole Miss when he made the switch. At Ole Miss, Wright was the one everyone looked out for on Saturday nights, as he recorded 39 receptions for 635 yards and five touchdowns last season alone for the Rebels.
“Wright, who graduated from high school in 2022 and whose college eligibility ended last season, had filed a lawsuit because he was not included in the NCAA’s new rule — less than 2 months old — that grants most Division I athletes five years of eligibility over five years but doesn’t take effect until next season,” ESPN adds.
Wright’s storyline will undeniably be college football’s biggest headliner—if not the NFL’s too—with the power to completely blur the lines that have defined roster construction for generations.
