Flash flood warnings were in effect across much of New York City Thursday evening as thunderstorms carrying heavy rain and strong winds swept through the region, causing traffic delays on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
Flooding was causing eastbound traffic delays on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway approaching Cadman Plaza West in Brooklyn around 7 p.m., according to New York City Emergency Management. A minute later, the agency reported flooding-related eastbound delays on the Grand Central Parkway at 82nd Street in Queens. Officials advised drivers to consider alternate routes and allow additional travel time.
The warning for Manhattan and Brooklyn, issued at 5:40 p.m., is in effect until 7:45 p.m. The weather service issued another warning for Queens, the Bronx and Hempstead in Nassau County, Long Island shortly after 6:10 p.m., which is in effect until 8:15 p.m.
A tornado warning was issued for Inwood, Cedarhurst and Lawrence in Nassau County and is in effect until 7:15 p.m., according to the weather service.
The NWS also said earlier that storms moving east from northeastern New Jersey carried threats of heavy rain and wind gusts up to 50 mph.
A special weather statement was also issued for Staten Island as the storms approached the city.
