After tearing his Achilles during January's postseason, it was fair to wonder when, exactly, we'd see George Kittle again. His injury, after all, doesn't necessarily lend itself to a quick and easy recovery, especially when it comes to the physical demands of a balanced tight end like Kittle, who can dominate the line of scrimmage as a blocker and the middle of the field as a receiver.
But recent updates on Kittle's status moving forward have been promising . It's to the point where a possible Week 1 return, when his San Francisco 49ers will play the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, is becoming increasingly realistic. Which is wild to think about with Kittle only being seven months removed from a delicate injury, a torn Achilles.
On Sunday, the 49ers inadvertently whipped up more (positive) speculation regarding Kittle's game shape.
By activating the seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, they delivered a signal as clear as any. Kittle's return to the field doesn't appear all that far off. If anything, it might be imminent as he now starts practicing more in earnest before the 49ers' regular-season opener next month. This development is, to be clear, great news for the 49ers. It's also great news for any fantasy football managers looking for more sleeper/good value bargains at tight end.
Kittle just might be their man:

— ESPN (@espn) August 23, 2026 Ability-wise, Kittle probably hasn't fallen off as far as you think, if at all. But coming off his torn Achilles, there's a good chance that any draft you participate in between now and the start of the season will have the veteran star go a tad later than we're used to, given the inherent risks associated with a player coming off a serious injury. Still, provided he isn't too rusty when he comes back, Kittle is obviously worth a later-than-usual-round investment given his tremendous body of work and place in the 49ers' offense.
Don't say I didn't point you in the right direction.
Is George Kittle's backup worth investing in for fantasy football if he's not ready for Week 1?
As much as current Kittle backup Jake Tonges seems like a solid professional, I can't say he's worth using a decent fantasy pick on. However, should Kittle still miss some time to start the year, Tonges might become a quality waiver-wire pickup, presuming he hasn't been snatched up already.
