The Cleveland Browns finally ended their quarterback competition on Monday, Aug, 24, when they named Deshaun Watson the starter.
Todd Monken announced the decision after giving Watson and Shedeur Sanders one start each across the first two preseason games. He cited Watson's performance throughout the competition, as well as the veteran's experience, as being important in the team's decision .
Watson had the stronger outing in his Week 1 start, but Sanders was the better of the two in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills .
Now, Watson will prepare to lead the Browns into their Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars . In the meantime, that should open up more playing time for players further down the depth chart, Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green , as they look to state their case for roster spots in Cleveland's final preseason game against the New England Patriots.
Speaking of the Patriots, they haven't played many of their starters across their first two preseason games. Drake Maye hasn't yet played, and it isn't yet clear whether the 2025 MVP runner-up will see in-game action in New England's preseason finale.
That said, Mike Vrabel's comments about the Patriots' depth could be a sign that he wants to get his starters a bit of a tune-up before the season.
"I don’t think we have a very deep team," Vrabel said when asked about whether he plans to play the starters in the final preseason game, per Patriots Wire . "We have to make sure that we’re preparing our football team and that we’re doing everything that we can that we keep our best players available. If that means playing Thursday as part of preparation, then that’s what we'll do."
"I have not made that decision yet, but I would say that that’s something that I’m confident in with where we’re set up currently."
