Residents of a small Michigan city are suing a data center operator over what they describe as a relentless, " high-pitched whining sound " that can be heard day and night—adding to a growing number of disputes across the United States where communities are pushing back against the impacts of the AI infrastructure boom.
The lawsuit , Valenzuela et al. v. Alliance Cloud Services, LLC , filed on May 26 by homeowners in Dowagiac, Michigan, is targeting Alliance Cloud Services, a subsidiary of Hyperscale Data.
Residents allege that the facility has emitted this constant noise for roughly two years, disrupting sleep, outdoor activities and daily life. Several neighbors likened the sound to a vacuum cleaner running continuously inside their homes. According to Tom’s Hardware, one said it sounds like a vacuum that needs to be cleaned as "the filter is clogged up, so it’s a high-pitch whining. And they just left it on and walked out."
The site began as a cryptocurrency mining operation before the company announced plans to pivot toward artificial intelligence computing and advanced robotics, saying it planned to spend $100 million on the facility, and assured residents that it had also purchased acres of extra land to help limit any possible noise pollution, saying that if that doesn’t work, it will " buy their property from them. "
The dispute has already prompted action from local officials.
Dowagiac adopted an industrial noise ordinance that limits sound levels to 65 decibels during the day and 55 decibels at night, and the city has fined the facility for alleged violations.
Hyperscale Data has challenged the city's noise measurements and the methodology it’s used to collect the data, Tom’s Hardware reported .

As AI companies race to build larger data centers to support growing demand for computing power, noise has emerged as an increasingly common concern alongside water consumption, electricity demand and land use.
In Wisconsin, residents near Microsoft's Fairwater data center in Mount Pleasant and neighboring Sturtevant have filed a proposed class-action lawsuit, Ostergaard et al. v. Microsoft Corporation , alleging unreasonable and excessive noise from the facility, according to the Wisconsin Examiner .
The July 1 lawsuit claims sound generated by cooling systems, generators and other equipment can be heard a mile and a half beyond the company's property boundaries.
Plaintiffs say the noise has disrupted sleep and reduced their ability to enjoy their homes and backyards. Some residents have described the sound as a constant low-frequency hum. The lawsuit seeks damages and alleges Microsoft failed to adequately mitigate the noise. No formal legal defenses have been filed publicly yet by Microsoft.

In Virginia's Loudoun County—often called "Data Center Alley" because of its large concentration of server farms—noise has become one of the most persistent complaints raised by residents and community groups.
Residents living near data centers in Sterling have reported hearing everything from low-frequency hums and propellerlike sounds to high-pitched whining that can be heard miles away. One Politico report detailed complaints surrounding a Vantage Data Centers facility, where nearby homeowners said noise from on-site turbines made outdoor spaces unusable.
The issue has become significant enough that Virginia lawmakers have proposed legislation focused specifically on data center noise mitigation, including requirements for acoustic studies, community notification and long-term noise monitoring. Noise concerns also frequently surface during zoning debates and public hearings over new hyperscale developments.
The Michigan, Wisconsin and Virginia disputes highlight a broader challenge facing the rapidly expanding AI industry.
While data centers are generating billions of dollars in investment and supporting next-generation AI systems, residents in some host communities say the facilities can bring unexpected consequences, including noise pollution, light pollution and increased pressure on local resources.
Industry groups and operators argue that newer designs, sound barriers and improved cooling technologies can reduce impacts. Yet as more AI-focused facilities are proposed across the country, community concerns about noise are increasingly becoming a flashpoint in local debates over where—and how—the next generation of data centers should be built.
