LA Galaxy announce signing of Mexico international after being frozen out by MLS rivals

Hirving “Chucky” Lozano has finally found a new home, having been deemed surplus to requirements at San Diego FC, with his last appearance coming in November.
The Mexican international, 31, joined San Diego ahead of its first MLS season in the summer of 2024, officially transferring from Dutch side PSV in January 2025. He wound up making 34 appearances, scoring 11 goals, and adding nine assists across all competitions as the MLS debutants won the Western Conference before losing the Conference Finals to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Unfortunately, rumors began to swirl of issues between Lozano and head coach Mikey Varas, as well as between the former Napoli star and teammates, after he was taken off during a game against the Houston Dynamo in October. Relegated to the bench for the remainder of the season, he wound up scoring two goals during the Playoffs, as per ESPN .

Now, the MLS’s fourth-highest earner, with Lozano set to pocket $9.333 million this season alone, has found a new home on the West Coast with a side in desperate need of a spark after an abysmal title defense in 2025, with this season also proving tough so far.
He joins the Galaxy on loan through the rest of this season with the option to make the move permanent included. He’ll occupy a Designated Player roster spot alongside Joseph Paintsil and João Klauss, with fellow DP Riqui Puig on the Season-Ending Injury list, having already missed all of 2025.
In a statement, Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz wrote, “Hirving is a player whom we tried to acquire three years ago, so this feels like something of a full-circle moment.
“He is a fierce competitor with an excellent track record of performing on teams that have competed for titles in multiple leagues, including his debut season in MLS.
“As we evaluated opportunities to strengthen our roster for the stretch run of the season, it became clear that Hirving was the right player for the moment we are in as a club. We have a talented group, a strong locker room, and a clear objective over these final 15 games of the season, and we are thrilled that Hirving and his family are joining the Galaxy.”

San Diego’s sporting director Tyler Heaps also released a statement on Friday, which read, “We have been working with Hirving and his side to find the right opportunity for him to get him back on the field. We appreciate his contributions during our record-setting inaugural season and wish him well as he continues his career.”
Currently 12th in the Western Conference, the Galaxy has yet to win since returning from the FIFA World Cup break, with their last competitive victory having come back on May 16 against the Seattle Sounders.
With a 5-7-7 record so far this season, they sit just one place and one point above San Diego, who lost their Leagues Cup group opener against Club América 3-1 on Thursday at Estadio Banorte.
