The Golden State Warriors were in pursuit of LeBron James this offseason, but ultimately did not have the most appealing situation to bring him in. The Warriors are now in the later stages of the careers of franchise cornerstones Steph Curry and Draymond Green.
This summer has been a disappointing one for the organization, as Golden State has done little to improve its roster. In fact, some believe the offseason has started to derail.
“The Golden State Warriors' offseason is quickly going off the rails, with them having done little to improve thus far. The Warriors failing to improve their roster this summer should come as a massive disappointment to star Steph Curry,” Hoops Habit’s Cal Durrett wrote.
There has been growing frustration surrounding the Warriors’ direction, especially with Curry nearing the end of his career. NBA Today’s Kendrick Perkins believes Curry should consider moving on and pursuing another opportunity.
“Steph needs to be planning his exit strategy from the Golden State Warriors," said Perkins on 'NBA Today'. "Think about it, over the last four years, the Warriors have been in the play-in tournament. And this year, the way that the West is stacked up, they're gonna be a play-in tournament team again. You can't waste any more time hoping and banking that Mike Dunleavy is gonna get it right or is gonna make the moves that are needed to make sure that you can compete for a title, especially in a tough Western Conference.
If Curry does decide he wants out, a trade could become a possibility. Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley believes the Boston Celtics could make a move for Curry by sending Paul George and multiple future assets back to Golden State.
“Boston Celtics receive: Stephen Curry. Golden State Warriors receive: Paul George, Chris Cenac Jr., 2027 first-round pick, 2031 first-round pick and 2032 first-round pick swap,” Buckley wrote.
Golden State has a need for future assets, and this potential deal would provide the franchise with valuable draft capital. At some point, the organization has to begin seriously considering the future direction of the team while still respecting Curry’s championship window.
George has earned $406 million throughout his NBA career. The Warriors would likely have George for at least two seasons, as he holds a player option for the 2027-28 season. Meanwhile, Curry joining forces with Jayson Tatum would create one of the most difficult offensive duos in the Eastern Conference to defend.
