Max Scherzer was defiant as the MLB’s trade deadline on Aug. 3 gets closer for him and the Toronto Blue Jays this season.
Scherzer is going through the 19th season of his career in the majors, his second with the Blue Jays. Toronto has been going through struggles this year, seeing the team figure out moves ahead of the deadline.
Scherzer reflected on the team’s situation while conversing with media, per reporter Keegan Matheson. He emphasized accountability, knowing these moves are happening because the team hasn’t been close to achieving expectations.

“We have not performed to our capabilities, and now the front office might have to make decisions about our roster because of that,” said Scherzer. “I understand that. I respect what the front office has to do. They’ve got to make decisions that are best for the organization.
“If they sell, that’s on us. That’s on us as players that we have not done our job of holding up our end of the bargain and going out there and winning ball games.”

Toronto had a quiet night as it didn’t score its lone run until the eighth innings to tie the game. However, St. Louis delivered clutch moments in the top of the ninth frame. They scored four runs in that stretch, salvaging the three-game set with a win in the series finale.
Toronto fell to a 52-60 record on the season, remaining at the bottom of the AL East Division standings. They are behind the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox at the moment.
The Blue Jays will look to bounce back in their next series, being on the road. They take on the Houston Astros as Game 1 commences on Aug. 3 at 8:10 p.m. ET.
