LeBron James might have signed for $8 million over two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, but his total economic impact will be much greater than that for the city and the region.
The 76ers might have completed the biggest bargain signing in NBA history after the all-time leading scorer, LeBron James, joined the franchise on the veterans’ minimum this offseason.
While James will earn $3.9 million from his contract in the 2026-27 season, the city of Philadelphia could see a 100x return on the 76ers’ investment.
LeBron James could generate over $400 million for Philadelphia
Consultant group The Boyd Company shared their economic projection of how James’ joining the 76ers could generate between $250 to $430 million in total regional economic activity next season.
“A move to Philly is more than a blockbuster sports story. It reinforces one of America’s premier sports and business markets, generates enormous media attention, fan engagement, tourism, and economic impact. The Boyd Co. knows that the biggest location decisions, whether made by Fortune 500 companies or superstar athletes, can reshape regional economies and propel a city’s national profile.”
James’ arrival on the 76ers will not only promote the squad into being legitimate contenders next season after acquiring former Finals MVP Jaylen Brown earlier in the offseason.
James will presumably be the biggest jersey seller in the NBA next season with a brand-new No. 23 jersey for fans to buy. While Giannis Antetokounmpo’s new No. 7 on the Miami Heat will also be popular, it won’t compare to a new LeBron jersey.

The impact of LeBron’s decision is already reflected in the ticket prices.
According to Tick Pick, the average purchase price for a 76ers game last season was $68, while the cheapest ticket for their first PRESEASON home game is $283.
James likely won’t even play in that preseason clash, but just the thought of the 41-year-old suiting up for the 76ers is inflating the price already. This also might be James’ final season in the NBA.
76ers gamedays will inevitably lead to a lot of tourists from nearby areas or even international fans contributing to the local economy, all because they’re in town to watch LeBron and the 76ers play.
