A 66-year-old Vacaville woman was killed early Sunday in a head-on collision after a suspected drunken driver traveled the wrong way on Interstate 505.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. on southbound I-505, just south of Putah Creek Road. California Highway Patrol dispatchers initially received an automated iPhone crash alert before incoming calls updated the incident to a multi-vehicle collision.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 45-year-old Vallejo man driving a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe missed an exit and made a U-turn on the freeway. Believing he was on a two-way county road due to a high level of suspected intoxication, the driver proceeded northbound in the southbound lanes, crashing head-on into a 2026 Nissan Kicks.
The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. Authority descriptions identified her as a 66-year-old White female adult.
The driver of the Tahoe, who was also the sole occupant of his vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of felony driving under the influence. Following medical clearance, he will be booked into the Solano County Jail.
Three additional vehicles sustained damage after striking debris scattered across the roadway from the initial crash.
Southbound traffic on I-505 was diverted at Putah Creek Road while officers investigated and cleared the scene. The freeway was fully reopened at approximately 4:20 a.m.
