According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Ten Doeschate informed the BCCI of his decision while the squad was still in the United Kingdom, a tour on which India lost both the T20I and ODI series.
He is now expected to return to IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders in a coaching capacity.
Handpicked by Gambhir after the 2024 T20 World Cup, ten Doeschate had become a trusted figure in the India think-tank, working across both the batting and fielding departments. Yet the circumstances of his exit point to frustrations that had been building for some time behind the scenes.

Why did Ryan ten Doeschate quit as India's assistant coach?
The central reason, as detailed in earlier reporting by PTI, was a lack of clarity over his role.
When Ten Doeschate joined on Gambhir's strong recommendation, he was promised the position of India's specialist fielding coach, having held that brief at KKR during Gambhir's mentorship. That role never came his way.
Existing fielding coach T. Dilip received a one-year extension after the 2025 Champions Trophy on the recommendation of a senior player, leaving Ten Doeschate without a defined domain within a crowded support staff.
A senior BCCI source explained this to PTI, noting that Sitanshu Kotak handled the batters alongside Gambhir, Morne Morkel oversaw the pacers and Sairaj Bahutule the spinners.
With Dilip retained in the fielding role Ten Doeschate had been earmarked for, the former Netherlands captain was left, in the source's words, as a fine coach who simply was not being used.

At Kolkata he may once again link up with Abhishek Nayar, renewing a long-standing coaching partnership.
