The ACC Board of Directors announced Thursday, Aug. 27, that it unanimously approved new rules that ban professional athletes from returning to play in the conference.
The ACC became the final Power Four conference to adopt this policy, with the Big Ten being the first to enforce it. The SEC and Big 12 soon followed.
Under the new rules, an ACC program is not allowed to include an individual on its football or men’s or women’s basketball roster when that athlete has:
Previously entered the NFL, NBA or WNBA Draft but did not withdraw by the NCAA's deadline to keep their college eligibility.
Signed a contract with an NFL, NBA, G League, WNBA team or one of their affiliated teams. For NBA Summer League, this includes certain paid contracts, such as an Exhibit 10 or Two-Way Contract.
Been listed on any roster for an NFL (or other professional football league), NBA/G-League or WNBA (or affiliate) team.
Power Four conferences have implemented this after many students-athletes have taken actions to sue the NCAA following the announcement of the 5-for-5 ruling, which will not go in effect until the 2027-28 sports season.
Louisville signee Seth Trimble is one of those players. He joined a lawsuit on Aug. 27 with Kentucky linebacker Alex Afari , as they look get gain a fifth year. They will have a special court hearing on Monday, Aug. 31.
