The 21-year-old Irishman played for hometown club Cork City and joined AC Milan, initially on loan, before making the move to the Italian giants permanent in the summer of 2022.
At Milan, Heffernan represented the club at Under-18 and Under-19 level.
In August 2023, he swapped Milan for Newcastle United, captaining the Magpies' Under-21 side, and had his first taste of senior football during a six-month spell at Harrogate Town.
"It was a no-brainer to me when I found out that Cambridge were interested. All my experiences have helped me gear up to this moment - I am relishing the challenge and really excited to get started," Heffernan told Cambridge's website.
