There's really no reason to believe that Aaron Rodgers won't have a stellar season with the Pittsburgh Steelers this year. He led the team to the top of the AFC North last season, and now, he's back with his former coach, Mike McCarthy, with whom he's won a Super Bowl.
So, it's all sunshine and flowers over Steelers land. But, if Rodgers goes down, whether he gets hurt or just isn't performing well, for whatever reason, they could be in trouble.
Just look at how Will Howard did in the team's preseason game on Friday against the New York Jets . It wasn't pretty, and CBS Sports has named him one of the biggest losers of the preseason.
Will Howard's rough outing raises questions
"The 2025 New York Jets became the first squad in NFL history to finish a season with zero interceptions in a regular season," Garrett Podell and Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports note. "Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard, the starter for the home team on Friday, acted as New York's slump buster, tossing not one but two picks the Jets' way on throws intended for wide receiver Roman Wilson over the middle of the field."
They add, "Not a great way to stay ahead of third-round rookie Drew Allar on the depth chart."
So, if Rodgers is unavailable, the Steelers are going to have some thinking to do. Of course, they have four quarterbacks total, so they have a lot, but Rodgers is clearly heads and shoulders above the rest. It's time to put some development into the backups they have.
