Sort of a good news/bad news situation today. The bad news is that there’s a Mariners game today. The good news is it’s an early one and you’ll get most of the day after it’s over. Also, it’s Harry Potter Day at Globe Life Field today, but whether that’s good news or bad news is a matter of perspective.
This will be Round 3 in the Battle of the Hatters, as Stetson alumni Logan Gilbert and Jacob deGrom face off. Combining their first two matchups, both in April, Gilbert has 11.1 IP, 4 ER, 13 H, 1 BB, 12 K and deGrom put up 9 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 9 K.

On the whole, Gilbert’s line doesn’t look all that bad, with six innings of five strikeouts, no walks, and just two runs. But I think that oversells how well he actually pitched, especially considering the quality of competition. The nine hard-hit balls and single whiff on his slider tell the more complete story.
And here’s from Round 2:
I’d like to look at Logan Gilbert’s line of 5.1 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 7 K, and say at least Gilbert had another good performance. But it really wasn’t great. He was all over the place in his first three innings: fastball velocity up and down, over-relying on his worst pitches while the splitter and slider sat on the shelf. A fastball right down Broadway to Brandon Nimmo resulted in a leadoff home run and set the tone. In Logan’s defense, just like Ryon Healy in the booth, he did get better once he started being himself in the fourth inning. But the damage had been done—to his pitch count if not the score.
Lineups
Pretty normal looking lineup today, though even against a righty, Young keeps the leadoff spot and Crawford slides down to the eight hole.
