Jürgen Klopp should have big aims in his new position as German national team coach and he has the personality to achieve them, Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has said.
"I think Jürgen Klopp will, quite rightly, put his faith in his strengths, and it’s also right to have big ambitions," Dreesen said on Tuesday at a Munich press club event.
Former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool coach Klopp was appointed last week as successor of Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after a last 32 exit at the recent World Cup.
Dreesen said it wouldn't make sense to have modest aims next time: "What kind of aim would that be? It can not be that the country with the biggest sports federation in the world has the aim to do better than last time. That would be the last 16."
Dreesen agreed that Klopp was the right man to take over the team, naming him "a people person" with "a very strong self-confidence which will hopefully rub off on the team."
The CEO also said that he doesn't expect fewer Bayern players in the Germany team now that Klopp was in charge as former coach of rivals Dortmund.
"I got to know Jürgen as someone who wants to win matches. He will only achieve that with Bayern players. That's not arrogance but a fact."
Bayern had half a dozen players in the German World Cup squad, led by national team captain Joshua Kimmich.
Former Bayern and Germany captain Lothar Matthäus urged Klopp to let Kimmich play in a "quarterback" role in midfield like he does at Bayern, and not as right back as he did under Nagelsmann.
"You need Kimmich in the centre," Matthäus said.
