Fans react as Ben Stokes spotted while Brydon Carse is handcuffed in Derby nightclub incident
English cricket has been drawn into another early-hours controversy after Brydon Carse was led away from a Derby nightclub in handcuffs by police. Footage circulating on social media has since gone viral, largely because of who else appears in it.
In the short clip, Carse is surrounded by four police officers outside the venue, thought to be Molly Malone's Irish Tavern. His Durham and England teammate Matthew Potts is seen attempting to speak to him, while Ben Stokes appears at the back of the shot.
According to Telegraph Sport , Carse was briefly detained at the scene but not arrested, returning to the team hotel soon afterwards. It remains unclear exactly what led officers to place him in handcuffs.
Carse was not on England duty at the time, having been sent to play for Durham against Derbyshire in the County Championship. Some members of the squad went out to celebrate a superb win in which Stokes took 5 for 17, and the incident occurred afterwards.

What happened outside the Derby nightclub
An ECB spokesperson confirmed the governing body is looking into the matter. "We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night and are currently investigating. We will provide a further update when possible," they said.
A second video seen by Telegraph Sport shows Carse being taken away from the nightclub and standing with a police officer and Stokes. Neither Stokes nor Potts has been accused of any wrongdoing, and both appear in the footage.
Carse remains part of the England squad for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's, which begins on Thursday. The squad assembles in London on Monday with training starting on Tuesday. He was an unused member of the group for the first Test at Headingley, which England won inside three days.
The 31-year-old has not played for England in any format since being their leading wicket-taker in Australia, where he featured in all five Ashes Tests, with injury keeping him out since. He was suspended for three months by the Cricket Regulator in 2024 for betting on cricket between 2017 and 2019.

Fans react to Ben Stokes being spotted at the scene
Much of the online reaction focused on Stokes appearing in the background, given his own recent history with late-night episodes. One fan wrote , "Always at the scene of crime." With the former England captain being the cause of an incident not even two months ago, fans aren't thrilled.
Always at the scene of crime
— (@on_drive2306) August 23, 2026 Another supporter simply posted a string of laughing emojis alongside a still of Stokes in the background of the footage. For them, finding Stokes at the spot is nothing but a good joke. But for others, things weren't so simple.
😂😂😂
— (@ItzansBoy) August 23, 2026 The timing drew particular attention, given Joe Root's first act as returning captain was to scrap the midnight curfew introduced after the Ashes. One fan wrote , "Joe Root reminded us there is no curfew for the England cricket team, as they are all grown adults. Then this happens."
Joe Root reminded us there is no curfew for the England cricket team as they are all grown adults… Then this happens…
— (@Surreycricfan) August 23, 2026 Others noted the coincidence of the incident occurring on Stokes' first County Championship appearance for Durham since his retirement from international cricket. "So this happened the first champo game that Stokes played for them?" one asked .
So this happened the first champo game that Stokes plays for them..?
— (@ACharlesClarke) August 23, 2026 The broader frustration was captured by supporters weary of the pattern. "England players drawn to a nightclub like a moth to a light – when will these guys ever learn?" one wrote .
England players drawn to a night club like a moth to a light when will these guys ever learn
— (@james_lawler1) August 23, 2026 Another put it more bluntly still, asking , "Just ONE test series without a drinking incident, is that really too much to ask for?"
Just ONE test series without a drinking incident, is that really too much to ask for?!
— (@reegan7181) August 23, 2026 For fans who thought that this Pakistan series would be different from the earlier Crowe-Thorpe Trophy were left exhausted after yet another incident.

Why the pattern is becoming impossible for the ECB to ignore
The fans mocking Stokes are being unfair on the specifics, as he has not been accused of anything here and was simply present outside a venue after a county win. But the wider frustration is entirely understandable given how frequently English cricketers have featured in these stories over the past year.
The list is a long one. Harry Brook was punched by a nightclub bouncer in Wellington hours before captaining England in an ODI, the mid-Ashes break in Noosa generated headlines for the wrong reasons, and Stokes and Gus Atkinson were both stood down from the Oval Test after breaching the team'...
