Even after a hugely successful World Cup that brought booming business to downtown San Jose, one restaurant is pulling up stakes to focus on other South Bay locations.
Customers are just now learning that Sushi Confidential will soon leave San Pedro Square. According to a statement released by the restaurant, the downtown location will remain open until Aug. 31.
The restaurant’s owner declined further comment, but noted in the statement that the decision to leave was made before the World Cup in order to focus more on recently opened locations, including one in Willow Glen.
The departure comes on the heels of a massive boom for the area. During the tournament, San Pedro Square filled with tens of thousands of people for World Cup watch parties.
“This place was poppin, yeah,” one patron noted of the crowds.
Neighboring businesses heavily felt the positive impact of the influx.
“It’s been good for our business, too, bringing more people in, good flow, a lot of returning customers, new customers,” said Thinh Tran, a supervisor at Must Be Thai.
Neighboring businesses in the square, including Must Be Thai, said they didn’t know Sushi Confidential was leaving, but added that business has stayed strong even after the World Cup concluded.
“We’re a relatively new restaurant here, and the older restaurants, it’s been good for them,” Tran said.
Meanwhile, the Willow Glen location is already drawing its own steady stream of local supporters.
“Yeah, I think their food is pretty good,” San Jose resident Kim Hoang said. “There are a lot of options to pick from which I appreciate, I like the outdoor seating, it’s nice when you’re hanging out with friends.”
According to the owner, the focus will shift to Sushi Confidential’s three other San Jose locations, as well as its restaurants in Campbell and Morgan Hill. Employees affected by the closure will be relocated.
The owner also said the restaurant taking over the space is interested in keeping the current staff. Requests for further comment from restaurant management and the city went unanswered.
