The Philadelphia Eagles received clarity on wide receiver Johnny Wilson's roster status after he cleared waivers and reverted to the team's injured reserve list.
On Friday, ahead of the second preseason game, it was announced that Philadelphia had made a few roster moves . The signings of center Zeke Correll and wide receiver Brandon Hayes were also announced, along with Tariq Castro-Fields being placed on injured reserve, but Wilson being waived with an injury designation was the most eye-catching .
According to a report from NBC Sports mainstay Dave Zangaro, no team submitted a claim, meaning Wilson reverted to Philadelphia's injured reserve after passing through waivers.
Receiver Johnny Wilson, who was waived by the Eagles yesterday with an injury designation, cleared waivers and has now reverted to Injured Reserve.
— Dave Zangaro (@DZangaroNBCS) August 22, 2026 Wilson, 25, entered the NFL as a sixth-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft after a collegiate career with the Arizona State Sun Devils and Florida State Seminoles . At 6-foot-6 and 228 pounds, he quickly became one of the more intriguing developmental players on the Eagles ' roster because of his rare size and catch radius.
As a rookie, Wilson appeared in 16 games and made four starts, totaling five receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown. While his offensive production was limited, the Eagles valued his potential and versatility as he continued to develop behind a crowded group of pass catchers. Unfortunately, injuries have repeatedly interrupted that development. Wilson suffered season-ending knee and ankle injuries during a practice in 2025 and was still dealing with lingering knee issues when the Eagles made the decision to waive/injure him this summer.
Now that he has cleared waivers, Wilson will remain in Philadelphia's organization on injured reserve rather than becoming a free agent. The move allows the Eagles to retain his rights while he continues his recovery, preserving the possibility that the former sixth-round pick can resume his development once healthy. For a player whose size and athletic traits have long intrigued the organization, the story isn't over yet, even if another season has been interrupted by injury.
