LeBron James is widely considered one of the greatest players to ever play the game of basketball. As the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and the holder of several individual records, James certainly makes a strong case for himself in the GOAT debate. Unfortunately, the narrative around James continues to be questioned by players and fans alike.
Lakers legend Byron Scott is among the many former players who have dissected LeBron James’ legacy on a public platform. Although Scott already explained why James would come up short in surpassing Jordan even if he won a title with the 76ers , he recently shared a more interesting outlook on how the superstar has harmed his own case.
While speaking about James’ pursuit of greatness on a recent episode of the “ Fast Break ” podcast, Scott shared:
“Most of us judge LeBron based on the guys that you just mentioned, and I’ll throw one more guy in there, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He got traded from Milwaukee to LA, right? So two teams in his whole career. MJ, two teams basically, you know, in his whole career.”
“So when you’re judging LeBron, you’re looking at the greatest players of all time and what they did at those organizations. They basically never left. So I think he gets judged pretty harshly because of the fact that he’s bounced around.”
As Scott mentioned, LeBron James is notoriously known for switching teams over the course of his career. While this has only seen him move to four cities (Cleveland, Miami, Los Angeles, Philadelphia) during his career, the timing of these moves demands attention.
“Look at the history of the NBA. Most great players that are considered the greatest, even Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, you start going down the line,” Scott continued. “Most of those guys played with one team, maybe two. So I think the standard that we’re holding him up to is probably sometimes a little unfair because of those guys.”
The current iteration of the GOAT debate pits LeBron James against Michael Jordan . While solid points have been raised in favor of both players, which is to be expected given their remarkable legacies, many others are often used to tear them down.
On that note, LeBron James’ decision to leave and join different teams, even if it puts him in a better position to win, is often used against him. Given that players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson , and Kobe Bryant spent their entire careers with the same team, regardless of the circumstances, the argument against James’ loyalty to a franchise is intriguing.
Olden Polynice also built on Scott’s comments, adding:
“LeBron has never been traded. He’s always made his decision… LeBron has always made those decisions. ‘I’m leaving. I’m going over here. I’m going there.’ So you have a choice to make, and he tries to find the best possible situation for himself, which he has a right to do. But at the same time, if you pick the Philadelphia 76ers with this ready-made, stacked team, we can critique it.”
In all fairness, both Scott and Polynice present a fairly balanced take on the matter. While they both agree that judging LeBron James for switching teams, especially in the current context of the NBA, can be harsh, not winning with those teams also leaves him vulnerable to criticism .
With that narrative in mind, his latest move to the Philadelphia 76ers places immense pressure on the 41-year-old to win the title next season. Given how many have criticized the move as an attempt at “ring chasing,” coming up short with a stacked roster like Philadelphia’s is likely to affect James’ case, too.
Contrarily, some sources argue that moving cities, especially the move to Los Angeles, had nothing to do with winning titles . However, with the goalposts constantly being moved in James’ case, it has proven difficult to find a consistent argument involving LeBron James.
