I created monthly "spend no money days" when my three children were ages 6, 9, and 10.
On those days, we couldn't use cash, credit cards, or make online purchases.
They loved these fun adventures, but I found it difficult.
I created monthly "spend-no-money days" when my three children were ages 6, 9, and 10 to teach them financial responsibility . I wanted them to understand that not every want needed to become a purchase, and that family fun did not have to come with a receipt.
On those days, we couldn't use cash, credit cards , or make online purchases. No fast food. No quick Target run. No app purchase. No "just this one thing." If we needed entertainment, snacks, supplies, or a way to fill the afternoon, we had to use what we could find around the house.
My kids were used to convenience
The idea came from a pattern I started to notice. My kids were not ungrateful, but they were becoming very accustomed to convenience. A trip to the store came with the expectation that someone would ask for a toy , a book, a candy, or a gadget that one of their friends had gotten during the week. Outings seemed to require a purchase to feel complete. Boredom had started to sound like a shopping list.

I wanted to slow that down. I wanted them to practice distinguishing between wants and needs in a concrete way, not just a lecture at the checkout line. I wanted them to learn delayed gratification before the stakes became higher than a plastic toy at the dollar store or a drive-through milkshake.
We had no spending days
So I made random "spend no money days." They were not always the first Tuesday of the month or a neatly planned family challenge on the calendar. Usually, I would wake up exhausted from a prior day of excessive neediness and announce, "Guess what? Today is Spend No Money Day."
In the summer, we would wash the car by hand . I let the kids pack our lunch, and we'd take it to a playground and eat at a picnic table. When it was cold or rainy, we would pull out craft supplies, board games, books, and forgotten toys. Sometimes I had them read to me. Sometimes they made costumes and put on shows. Sometimes they made up silly games that kept everyone laughing, like whoever touches the lava (i.e., the grass) last wins.
To my surprise, my kids loved these days. Maybe it was because the rule disrupted our normal routine. Maybe it was because I was more present when I was not trying to solve every inconvenience with my wallet. Maybe it was both. What I had framed as a lesson in money became, for them, a day of adventure.
I learned about my own spending
But I also learned something uncomfortable. I was not as self-sufficient as I thought I was. In fact, I was spending a lot of time and money preparing to spend no money. Throughout the month, I found myself stocking up on easy picnic-friendly options, craft supplies like colorful pipe cleaners, pom-poms, and markers. I was building a little emergency bunker of wholesome family fun.
That defeated the purpose. I had created a rule to teach my children not to rely on spending, only to realize I was relying on spending to make the rule easier on myself.
Motherhood often rewards convenience. Running through a drive-through can provide more time to eat together. Buying a small treat can prevent a public meltdown. Ordering the missing school item online can keep the week from falling apart. I do not judge myself for any of that. Convenience is not a moral failure. But I started to see how often I used money to save time, manage moods, and avoid conflict.
And one of the hardest parts of no-spend days was carrying the mental load of making the day work. I had to think ahead about meals, activities, weather, errands, and everyone's patience level. If someone needed poster board for school, medicine from the pharmacy, or gas for the car, the rule had to be bent. I learned that a no-spend day should support a family, not punish the person managing it.
Over time, I softened the guidelines. Essentials were allowed. Emergencies did not count. If the day became more stressful than useful, we adjusted. The goal was not perfection; it was awareness.
My kids began to understand that wanting something did not mean needing it. They learned that fun could be homemade, that boredom would not kill them, and that waiting for something sometimes made it more meaningful. I learned that financial responsibility was not just a lesson I could hand down to them. It was something I had to practice, too. Our spend-no-money days taught my children to pause before asking for something. They taught me to pause before assuming spending was always the wrong answer.
