An NYPD vehicle hit a man who was lying on a Bronx street early Saturday morning, moments after another car ran him over, a department spokesperson said.
The man died, and police are not sharing his name until they contact his family.
Police said the man got into a fight with another man shortly before 4 a.m. on Saturday, then was seen lying unconscious and unresponsive on College Avenue. About 10 minutes later, a white BMW SUV struck him and fled the scene, according to the department spokesperson. Then a marked police vehicle traveling about 12 mph hit the man, who was still lying in the road, police said.
The driver of the NYPD car stayed at the scene and rendered aid, but the man was pronounced dead once he got to Lincoln Hospital, according to police. The department said it has not made any arrests, and an investigation is ongoing.
NYPD vehicles have also been involved in other collisions in recent years. Last August, a police car ran over a man who was lying on a road in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. In April 2022, a department van struck and killed a man who was standing in a painted median on Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway on a rainy night. A teen on a Citi Bike was also injured after he crashed into a parked car in July while trying to move around an SUV from the NYPD commissioner’s security detail that was pulling into oncoming traffic, Gothamist previously reported.
