Brendan Schaub heavily downplayed UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev 's resume ahead of UFC 330.
Makhachev (28-1 MMA, 17-1 UFC) makes his first UFC welterweight title defense against Ian Machado Garry (17-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) in Saturday's main event ( Paramount+ ) at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
Makhachev broke the UFC lightweight record for most title defenses before vacating his belt for a move up to welterweight. He claimed the 170-pound belt by dominating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322. Despite all that, Schaub is not sold on who Makhachev has beaten throughout his UFC career.
"It would be tough to claim him GOAT off of his resume," Schaub said of Makhachev on his YouTube channel . "I'm not being an Islam hater, but let’s go through it. His first win at welterweight, he beat JDM. How's JDM doing these days? He defended a shot against Renato Moicano. Not Islam's fault, but it is what it is. Dustin Poirier in 2024, OK.
"And then (Alexander) Volkanovski, who's not really a '55'er, struggled with him in the first fight then came back too soon and got KO'd in the second. Charles Oliveira is his best win, and that was in 2022. Based off his resume, I don't have him in the top 10. I'm not hating, it's just his strength of schedule is so weak. ... His resume is weak as f*ck. It's the problem with Khabib's, too: weak as f*ck."
Makhachev is a big favorite over Machado Garry as he aims to break the record for most consecutive wins in UFC history, which he is currently tied for with Anderson Silva at 16.
