Starting pitcher performance
The last time he pitched, Joe Ryan surrendered a franchise-record six home runs to the Cleveland Guardians. Days later, arm fatigue led to his scheduled start being pushed back from Sunday.
So, it was only natural to wonder how the all-star starter would look in his start on Tuesday. He gave up four runs in six innings and was hurt, in part, by the defense behind him.
In the fourth inning, for example, center fielder Luke Keaschall had a ball that hit off the outfield wall ricochet past him. The end result was a triple for Salvador Perez, who then came around to score the Royals’ second run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
Ryan allowed a home run to the Royals’ No. 9 hitter Tyler Tolbert in the third and gave up a pair of runs in the fifth.
Player of the game
One year and one day after the Twins traded Randy Dobnak to the Detroit Tigers as part of a trade deadline sell-off, the former Twin returned to Target Field and absolutely shut down his former teammates.
Though the Twins had a number of hard-hit balls against Dobnak — eight that topped 100 miles per hour off the bat — they could not mount much of anything against him. Dobnak threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits in the Royals win.
Dobnak — whose rise took him from the independent leagues, to driving for Uber as a way to make extra income as a minor leaguer, to rocketing through the Twins’ system and making a playoff start at Yankee Stadium — began this season in the minor leagues with the Seattle Mariners. He wound up in the Royals’ organization in June and was called up at the beginning of July, pitching at his best since then.
With his seven innings on Wednesday, Dobnak now has a 1.04 ERA this season across five appearances, including three starts. He made just six total major league appearances in 2024-25 for the Twins.
