The Boston Red Sox's nine-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday when they lost 7-3 to the Athletics.
Coincidentally, the last time the Red Sox lost before Saturday was also to the A's. Not only that, but they lost with the same opposing pitcher on the mound: Gage Jump. Jake Bennett was the Red Sox's starter in both games, but he was not as sharp on Saturday.
However, the real story is Jump. He has a 4.46 ERA on the season and has walked 33 batters in 72 2/3 innings of work. He has one of the worst walk rates in baseball and has not been sharp this year overall. Still, in his two starts against the Red Sox, he has carved them up.
On July 28, he went six innings, allowing three hits and no runs. He struck out seven batters but did issue four walks. On Saturday, he delivered another quality start. He allowed two earned runs in six innings of work. He gave up six hits and issued two walks, but he struck out 11 batters, setting a new career high.

The most strikeouts he ever had in a Minor League game was 13, so his 11-strikeout game ranks second for his career since being drafted out of Louisiana State University.
Overall, Jump is not having the best rookie year, but there is something about his stuff that has given the Red Sox trouble. He got nine whiffs on his four-seam fastball on Saturday and threw six different pitches in the game. Eight of his strikeouts came on the fastball. He picked up two strikeouts on the slider and one on his sweeper.
Luckily for the Red Sox, they will not have to see him again this season.
