Minnesota's Attorney General has sued Texas Governor Greg Abbott, seeking to force the extradition of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent facing charges in an Operation Metro Surge shooting.
Keith Ellison asked a federal judge to block the release of agent Christian Castor, and to order Abbott to sign his extradition so that he can stand trial in Minnesota. Castro, who is currently being held in Cameron County jail, faces release next week.
Castro was arrested in Texas in May on charges of assault and falsely reporting a crime over a non-fatal shooting in Minneapolis in January. Castro is accused of firing a gun through a door of a Minneapolis home and hitting Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg. Prosecutors say Castro then falsely accused Sosa-Celis and another man of attacking an ICE officer.
Announcing the move on Tuesday, Ellison wrote on X: "ICE agent Christian Castro is charged with 4 counts of 2nd degree assault for allegedly shooting into a home with people inside during Metro Surge, hitting someone in the leg.
"Greg Abbott has thus far refused to extradite Castro to Minnesota, so I'm suing Abbott to make him."
Newsweek contacted Abbott's office for comment outside of regular business hours.
