Olympic swimming legend Katie Ledecky had not lost an 800-meter freestyle at an international meet in 14 years before Saturday. But then, Australian swimmer Lani Pallister ended Ledecky's winning streak during the event final at the Pan Pacific Championships.
Pallister won the race with a time of 8:06.10, while Ledecky finished in second with a time of 8:07.26.
“The time I’m pretty happy with,” Ledecky said, per The Athletic . “I wasn’t really thinking too much about my history in the event or anything leading into this. I just wanted to have a good last event here. I’m really proud of the history I have in this event. That doesn’t go anywhere just from getting second.”
Pallister also defeated Ledecky in the 400 on Friday. Meanwhile, Ledecky won the 1,500-meter freestyle against Pallister three days prior. Last summer, Ledecky won the 800 against Pallister at the world championships by just 0.36 seconds.
This time around, Pallister defeated Ledecky by 1.16 seconds.
“Today’s the most nervous I’ve ever felt in my entire life,” Pallister said, per The Athletic. “I was warming up, and I had my teammates come and have a little chat with me to see if they could brighten my mood a little bit. I think I was just so locked in, and I’ve been really focused on what I want.”
Pallister's mother, Janelle Pallister, also competed the 800 at the 1988 Olympics .
The 24-year-old said she wants to break Ledecky's world record (8:04.12) in the next two years. The 2028 Summer Olympics would be a great place for Pallister to become the new world record holder.
