News, notes from Day 1 of Miami Dolphins 2026 training camp
The Miami Dolphins are embarking on a new journey that started months ago with Jon-Eric Sullivan taking over as general manager and Jeff Hafley doing the same at head coach.
After months of OTAs, rehab, recovery and preparation, the Dolphins finally got back on the field on Wednesday for the first day of training camp as they ready for the start of a new season and a new era in South Florida.
Here's what happened at the Baptist Health Training Complex on Wednesday morning.
Attendance
The Dolphins didn't have any surprise absences during the session, but it was noted by those in attendance that wide receiver Chris Bell (NFI) and cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. (PUP) were watching practice from the side.
Others like Jamaree Salyer, Caleb Douglas, Robert Beal Jr., Cameron Goode, De'Von Achane and Austin Jackson were back working in full after dealing with injuries earlier in the offseason.
Notes
As the team eases back into their schedule, the players were didn't wear pads on Day 1, which always keeps the level of physicality and intensity on the lower end. Per usual, the team worked through position drills, 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s before wrapping things up.
Linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who flashed last year in camp, reportedly made the play of the day, interception quarterback Cam Miller with one hand and returning it for a touchdown. Safety Michael Taaffe also recorded an interception in the session, catching a pass from Quinn Ewers.
The Souta Florida Sun-Sentinel's David Furones noted that Ewers should've had another interception, but cornerback Ethan Bonner dropped the ball. Miller also got lucky, as Alex Austin dropped a would-be interception.
Furones also noted that running back Ollie Gordon II lost a fumble during the practice, and linebacker David Ojabo seemed to get congratulated by his defensive teammates.
Quarterback Malik Willis was reportedly steady. No big positives or negatives.
ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques believes that wide receiver Caleb Douglas "popped," and Kevin Coleman Jr. made some plays in a decent first day for the pair of healthy drafted wideouts.
The Palm Beach Post's Hal Habib noted that Hafley split times with both sides. The coach seemed to give some hands-on tips to rookie cornerback Chris Johnson, at one point.
