Gill was struck on his right thumb by a delivery from one of the pacers while batting in the nets on Thursday, the second day of India's training in Sri Lanka. The 26-year-old was visibly in pain and received immediate treatment from the team physio, who applied a band-aid before Gill resumed his batting session.
His discomfort did not end there. Later in the day, Gill appeared to hurt his right hand again during slip-catching practice, forcing him to stop fielding drills and apply an ice pack. The double blow briefly raised alarm within an India camp already stretched thin by injuries.

The early indications on Shubman Gill's fitness offer India considerable relief.
Preliminary assessments reportedly showed no structural damage or fracture to his right hand, and the India captain was able to complete his training session without major discomfort after returning to face the spinners in the nets.
The Indian team management will be hopeful the knock is nothing serious, given Gill has been India's standout batter in the longest format since taking over the captaincy during the England series.
The exact severity is yet to be officially confirmed by the BCCI, but Gill's continued participation in practice points to a minor issue rather than a lasting one.
Barring any setback in the coming days, Gill is expected to be available when India begins the series against Sri Lanka in Galle on August 15, with the second Test to follow at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23.
