Shortstop Colson Montgomery , who leads the White Sox with 24 home runs, sat out their 12-3 victory Sunday against the Astros with a bruised right shin.
Montgomery aggravated a previous injury when he fouled a pitch off the shin in the ninth inning Saturday but stayed in the game and singled in the Sox’ only run of a 4-1 loss.
Montgomery wanted to rest and treat the bruise and hopes to be ready to play when the Sox open a four-game series Monday against the Yankees.
‘‘Kind of things just to flush out, swelling and things like that,’’ Montgomery said. ‘‘It’s just something that we get ahead of right now.’’
Montgomery said the foul ball struck him above his ‘‘regular’’ and custom leg guards and near a previously bruised area. Injured catcher Kyle Teel suggested adapting a catcher’s shin guard for protection, but Montgomery said it wouldn’t be comfortable.
Measuring stick?
The Yankees come to the South Side for four games, then play three against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
The timing might be perfect for Chicago’s teams.
The Yankees put All-Star outfielder — and former Cub — Cody Bellinger on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring. They have been without outfielder Aaron Judge (fractured rib) since May 31 and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton (strained right calf) since April 24.
Still, the Yankees are in second place in the American League East and have the second-best record in the league.
Sox manager Will Venable downplayed the series as a measuring stick for his team.
‘‘I think we’re kind of past playing games and measuring where we’re at,’’ Venable said. ‘‘We know we’re a good team. We know the Yankees are a good team. We’ll worry about them when we get there.’’
Sox add right-hander to pen
The Sox acquired right-hander Jose Urquidy from the Pirates for minor-league right-hander Felix Doroteo . Urquidy hasn’t pitched in the majors since April 13.
After signing with the Pirates in February, Urquidy posted an 8.53 ERA in 6⅓ innings of relief, prompting his demotion to Triple-A. As a starter at Indianapolis, Urquidy had a 3.66 ERA in 17 starts spanning 83 innings.
Doroteo had a 4.50 ERA in 16 games with the Sox’ Arizona Complex League team.
All-family first pitch
Sox slugger Munetaka Murakami’s parents each threw out a ceremonial first pitch. Murakami then hit two home runs and had a career-best six RBI.
Murakami’s father, Kimiya , tossed his pitch to his son. His mother, Fumiyo , threw hers to interpreter Kenzo Yagi .
‘‘The last time my parents came, I wasn’t on the field; I was injured,’’ Murakami said. ‘‘Just being out there on the field today and getting the result in front of them, it’s just really speechless.’’
Spritz, that’s it!
Murakami’s bobblehead was sponsored by Toto Ltd., a leading Japanese plumbing-fixture brand, and its Toto Washlet. That’s the electronic toilet-seat bidet the Sox asked Toto to install in their clubhouse commodes after Murakami requested it.
Bidets use a stream of water to clean a person’s derriere. Although unfamiliar to many Americans, bidets are common in Japan and in some European countries.
Shinya Tamura , the president of Toto, also threw a ceremonial first pitch, and the company had a product display across from Rate Field. The Murakami bobblehead was featured on Toto’s U.S. website.
Toto is using its relationship with Murakami to help introduce its Washlet to U.S. customers, including other major-league teams.
‘‘It’s not like everyone knows about it yet,’’ Tamura said through an interpreter. ‘‘And having Murakami as a popular person, influential person, introduce something about Washlet Toto, that will be helpful to us.’’
