The second week of Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial was marked by rising tensions in the courtroom, including a heated dispute between the defense and prosecution that prompted the judge to issue a courtroom warning.
Clancy, 35, a former Massachusetts General Hospital labor and delivery nurse, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children, Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months.
The defense has argued that Clancy was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis and a psychiatric crisis that left her unable to understand the consequences of her actions. Prosecutors have argued that Clancy was criminally responsible and that evidence from before and after the killings shows she understood what she was doing.
During the second week of testimony at Plymouth Superior Court in Massachusetts, jurors heard from psychiatrists, family members and other witnesses who offered competing accounts of Clancy’s mental state, her treatment history and the events leading up to January 24, 2023.
Among the most significant developments, a McLean Hospital psychiatrist testified that Clancy was diagnosed with severe major depressive disorder without psychotic features during her inpatient stay shortly before the killings. The defense challenged the evaluation, arguing doctors did not have access to her complete psychiatric history and may have underestimated the severity of her condition.
The competing portrayals of Clancy—as a mother experiencing a severe psychiatric crisis or as someone who remained aware of her actions—continued to define the trial’s central question.
Here are the five biggest developments from the second week of testimony.
One of the most dramatic moments of the second week unfolded after Lindsay Clancy became visibly distressed while jurors were shown autopsy evidence. The exchange came during some of the most emotionally charged testimony of the trial so far, as jurors heard new details about the deaths of Clancy’s three children and the psychiatric treatment she received in the months before the tragedy.
During the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's testimony about the examination of the youngest child, Clancy became visibly emotional.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington accused a prosecutor of saying "shut her up" as Clancy sobbed.
“This is not like ‘Handmaid’s Tale.’ You can’t tape her mouth shut,” Reddington said.
Prosecutors immediately disputed the allegation, telling Judge William Sullivan that the remark was actually "shut it off"—a reference to removing an image from courtroom monitors rather than a comment directed at Clancy.
The disagreement briefly halted proceedings before Sullivan addressed everyone in the courtroom.
"There will be no commentary from anybody," the judge said, warning that anyone making comments or outbursts during testimony would be removed from the courtroom.
The exchange underscored the emotional intensity that has characterized much of the trial, particularly during testimony involving the children and the medical evidence.
More than a week into the trial, jurors heard Lindsay Clancy speak publicly for the first time.
Before testimony began on August 4, Clancy answered a series of questions from Judge Sullivan as she agreed to a stipulation covering certain forensic evidence, including chain-of-custody procedures and post-mortem testing. The agreement meant prosecutors would no longer need to call numerous witnesses to establish those uncontested facts, streamlining part of the trial.
Speaking from her wheelchair, Clancy quietly responded, "Yes, Your Honor," as Sullivan asked whether she understood she was giving up her right to require the Commonwealth to prove those specific facts at trial.
"You are basically relieving the Commonwealth of its burden to prove certain facts. Is that what you want to do?" Sullivan asked.
The exchange marked the first time jurors heard Clancy's voice since opening statements began.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington later explained that the stipulation related to technical forensic evidence—including DNA testing, toxicology and chain-of-custody records—and was intended to avoid lengthy testimony from dozens of witnesses whose evidence was not in dispute. The agreement does not affect Clancy's not guilty plea or her defense that she lacked criminal responsibility because of severe postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.
Although brief, the moment was significant because Clancy has remained largely silent throughout the proceedings, listening from her wheelchair as prosecutors and defense attorneys presented sharply different accounts of her mental state in the weeks leading up to January 2023.
The defense seized on testimony from Dr. Alia Goodheart, the psychiatrist who treated Clancy during her five-day stay at McLean Hospital less than three weeks before the deaths.
Under questioning from Reddington, Goodheart acknowledged that clinicians at the psychiatric hospital did not obtain Clancy's complete prior psychiatric records before diagnosing and treating her.
Jurors heard that McLean relied largely on Clancy's own reporting, information from her husband Patrick Clancy and records available at the time of admission.
Reddington suggested that missing medical records may have prevented doctors from appreciating the full extent of Clancy's psychiatric decline.
The testimony supports one of the defense's central themes—that Clancy's condition was more serious than healthcare providers realized and that opportunities to identify postpartum psychosis were missed before January 24, 2023.
Prosecutors, however, have argued that regardless of any shortcomings in her treatment, the jury's task is to determine Clancy's criminal responsibility on the day her children died.
