See the full story · 2 sourcesThe UFC and head man Dana White are known for being bold. They make events happen in all sorts of places around the globe and don’t back down from huge challenges.
The latest triumph from the global MMA leader was Freedom 250. The octagon was brought to the White House. On this historic card, two titles were on the line, and some of the biggest names on the planet competed on the South Lawn.

The event was groundbreaking, totaling 34 million viewers worldwide. The fights also produced from an entertainment standpoint, as all seven fights ended in TKOs.
It was truly a spectacle. Freedom 250 was capped off by an American breaking through to win the lightweight championship in Justin Gaethje.
The event couldn’t have gone smoother from an outside perspective. Even so, making history costs money, and the UFC lost a lot of that.

The UFC lost $30 million on Freedom 250

It makes sense that the UFC, of all major sports leagues, was the one to pull this off. To begin this year, White and the UFC inked a new broadcast rights deal with Paramount. That deal is worth $7.7 billion over seven years.
After inking such a lucrative deal, the UFC had even more incentive to pull this off. What’s even more insane is that the estimated loss was supposed to be $60 million. According to TKO President Mark Shapiro , the initial estimate was cut down due to advertising and sponsorships.
Another piece of context: UFC President Dana White is a long-time friend of President Donald Trump. Trump has been a yearly regular at UFC events for years now. This just adds more clarity to how this event could happen.
White House card isn’t the first time the UFC made history
This also isn’t the first time the UFC has spent absurd money to throw an event. When Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili headlined a fight card at The Sphere in Las Vegas, the UFC spent $20 million on the event. The price tag was justified, as this was the first live sporting event ever held at The Sphere.
Throwing an event on the White House Lawn makes The Sphere card look like child’s play. The UFC barely profited on the Sphere, generating roughly $22 million.
White and the UFC aren’t afraid to lose money to make history; it just has to be the right opportunity. It’s guaranteed that the White House card won’t be topped for years, no matter what extravagant event the UFC cooks up.
