See the full story · 2 sourcesThousands of runners took to the streets of Harlem Saturday morning for the annual Percy Sutton Harlem 5K.
New York Road Runners partnered with the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and HARLEM WEEK for the race, which kicked off HARLEM WEEK and celebrated the neighborhood's culture and creativity.
More than 5,000 runners took part in the event, which began at 8 a.m. at Edgecombe Avenue and West 136th Street and wrapped up at St. Nicholas Avenue and West 138th Street.
Eyewitness News sports anchor Sam Ryan was among those who participated, joining former deputy Manhattan borough president Keisha Sutton-James and racing alongside high school girls from NYRR's Run for the Future program.
The event marked the 15th anniversary of Run for the Future, with young women in the program completing their first 5K race.
Notable participants at the event also included NYRR CEO Rob Simmelkjaer and hip-hop artist and Harlem native FERG.
The race also marked a milestone for participants in the NYRR Open Run New Runner Clinic, a program designed to help runners kick-start their running journey, with many taking on their first 5K.
The day's events also included Rising New York Road Runners races for children and teens and the 1 Mile Hazel Dukes Memorial Family Health Walk.
