LeBron James agreed to a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, ending a free agency pursuit in which the Timberwolves were reportedly in the mix throughout the process.
Missing on a legend stings, but the way the front office sees it, the heavy lifting of this offseason was finished before James ever made his choice.
The Pursuit Was Real
Nobody in Minnesota is pretending the interest was casual.
According to The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski, the Timberwolves believed James' experience would be highly valuable to a young team built to win right away.
Anthony Edwards treated the chase with his usual sense of humor, joking that he would tear James' head off on the court when the two teams met if the decision went elsewhere, per Krawczynski.

Minnesota sent Naz Reid to Charlotte in the deal that landed LaMelo Ball and moved Julius Randle to Brooklyn, a two-part flip that changed the identity of the rotation in a single offseason.
President of basketball operations Tim Connelly has been open about his comfort with the group.
"Certainly it's going to be a new-look roster," Connelly said, in comments reported by Krawczynski, before crediting coach Chris Finch's willingness to evolve.
"There's not a more creative coach in the world, so we have full faith that whatever we put out there is going to be successful. It might look different, but we're excited about it."
Why the Confidence Makes Sense
Ball gives this team something it has lacked, a second creator who takes playmaking pressure off Edwards every night.
The new point guard averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists across 72 games last season in Charlotte, and the front office went all-in on the trade precisely because that skill set complements its star.

Jaden McDaniels, Rudy Gobert, Terrence Shannon Jr. and Joan Beringer round out a core that blends proven defense with untapped youth.
That is not a roster in crisis so much as a roster in transition, and transition was the entire point of this summer.
The Work Left To Do
Contentment is not the same thing as completion.
Dealing away Reid and Randle left a big roster hole in the frontcourt , and the coaching staff has not committed to sliding McDaniels to power forward full time, which leaves Trey Lyles, Josh Green, Jaylen Clark and Shannon competing to cover those minutes.
None of those answers is perfect, which is why the frontcourt will remain the loudest question in Minnesota until somebody claims the job or the front office finds one more move it likes.
Whether the answer comes from inside or through another move, the path Minnesota has charted toward the 2027 Finals never depended on James saying yes.
The Timberwolves wanted him, they lost him, and they still believe they got better this summer.
