Dustin Johnson has expressed his hope that LIV Golf will be able to continue following news that a lead investor has an agreement with the league.
Wednesday looked to be an extremely encouraging day for LIV Golf. Scott O’Neil was able to announce that an agreement with an unnamed investor had been struck.
The hope for LIV is that the news should ensure that the league remains around for several years to come. However, there are still plenty of hurdles to clear.
O’Neil was unable to provide many details. In fact, the LIV CEO was unable to even confirm whether the Team Championship will take place later this month as he spoke to the media.
At the very least, it does appear that LIV will continue beyond this season. One of the big questions now concerns which players will stick around for LIV 2.0.

Dustin Johnson was the highest-ranked player in the field at LIV’s first ever event back in 2022.
And speaking to Garrett Johnston following the news, the two-time major champion appeared to hint that he is ready to give the league every chance to kick on.

“I still think there’s a lot of moving parts. Obviously, that’s really good news,” he said.
“I missed the meetings yesterday, so I don’t have a lot of information, but I think LIV’s a great product and I’d love to see it continue so hopefully that’s the case.”

What is certain is that LIV as we know it is dead. The eye-watering sums spent on luring star players away from the PGA Tour were already a thing of the past before the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia stepped away.
And it seems that the schedule will look quite different next year, with 10 events planned for the season. Five are expected to take place in the United States, while the other five will be held across the globe.
Johnson has been accused of losing his competitive edge since joining LIV. So some would assume that having fewer events on the calendar would appeal to the 42-year-old.
However, he confirmed that he would look elsewhere to complete his schedule.
“Yeah I would definitely have to play some more events. I’d need to play a few more, not too many more. Even my last few years on the PGA Tour, I think I played 18, 19 and 19, so that’s what I like to play, between 18 and 20, so that’s where I keep my schedule at,” he said.
Johnson only signed a new contract with LIV ahead of the 2026 season. So he will almost certainly be one of those players speaking to his team to find out what his options are.
While his preference may well be to stay with LIV, he will be aware of just how many challenges the league still faces before their first event in 2027 gets going.
