See the full story · 3 sourcesIt’s hardly surprising at this point that President Trump would direct the United States government to go after his enemies in the media—the whole Jimmy Kimmel mishegoss was less than a year ago—but his recent verbal attack on NBC News’ Kristen Welker certainly has to rank among the pettiest examples of this. During this weekend’s Meet The Press , Welker observed that Trump’s endorsements of Republican candidates has received “some mixed results.” As USA Today points out , Trump’s endorsements have largely won, but there have been a few high-profile losses. Now, we could debate what success-to-failure ratio counts as “mixed results,” but we are well past that point.
In a post yesterday on Truth Social , in between AI-generated videos of Iran’s Kharg Island being attacked and an AI-generated graphic about vaccines, autism, and the Amish, Trump issued a missive explicitly directing the FCC and Brendan Carr to punish “the Unpopular ‘Hostess’ of the once great Meet the Press, now considered Meet the Fake Press.” Trump ( or, potentially, Natalie Harp ) writes, “Because of this purposeful inaccuracy, she will be reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment. … The Press is a Disgrace to our Nation, and I hope that Chairman Brendan Carr, and the fine people of his Commission, will take this Threat to our Country very seriously.”
Fortunately, NBC News was willing to do at least the bare minimum and stand by its reporter. “Kristen is one of the best in the business and we stand by her,” the organization said in a statement to USA Today . Based on his posting, the issue held the President’s attention for less than an hour; 55 minutes later, he was posting about “Canadian businesses… pouring into the United States.”
