LeBron James had a secret in-person meeting with only one team during his 2026 free agency, and it was a team that he ultimately rejected.
LeBron will be hoping to win his fifth championship with the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2026-27 season.
The 76ers pitched LeBron through Rich Paul and by players having direct conversations with the 41-year-old, as only one team were given the honor of formally meeting with James for their free agency pitch, albeit secretly.
LeBron James only met with the Cleveland Cavaliers as a free agent
ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed that James gave only the Cavaliers an in-person meeting, in secret, while being pitched by the 76ers, Warriors, Heat, and Timberwolves.
“In the early part of July, I’m told LeBron met with Cavs brass in his home in Akron, Ohio. That consisted of VP of Business Bryant Gilbert, President of Basketball Ops Koby Altman, and Assistant GM Brandon Weems.”
“These four in the room, sat and talked about his legacy and what a reunion on a third stint in Cleveland would look like… Granting that meeting to them is respect for the organization… His hometown team, he wanted to do right by the Cavs more than the 76ers or the Heat.”
The appeal of becoming the first player in history to win four championships on four different organisations proved to be too much for LeBron to ignore.
Additionally, moving to the 76ers allows James to start building out a life in New York City, with credible rumours suggesting he intends to live in NYC and travel to Philadelphia and New Jersey for games and practices respectively.

He’s inarguably the greatest player in the franchise’s history, spending 11 seasons and averaging 27.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists in 849 games over that time.
He has a 1-4 NBA Finals record with the franchise, but all his four losses came under incredible circumstances where the team mainly got there due to his historic production.
James averaged 30.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in 152 Playoff games in his Cavs career, setting franchise records so incredible that it might take another generation to break them.
But nothing can ever surpass LeBron breaking a 52-year Cleveland sports title drought in 2016 by overcoming a 3-1 series deficit against the greatest regular season team in history.
LeBron’s legacy as a Cavalier is secured. He’s now looking to build a legacy in a fourth city, but with at-max two years of basketball left in him.
