The Detroit Tigers are a team many around Major League Baseball have their attention on this summer as one of the most important teams of the MLB trade deadline.
If they sell, Tarik Skubal, Gleyber Torres, Casey Mize, and others are bound to be highly coveted. But what if the Tigers decide to buy instead and pursue a postseason run?
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale , if the Tigers end up buying instead of selling, they're going to be in pursuit of one kind of player: a late-inning reliever.
Tigers seeking 'late-inning reliever' in trade talks
"The Tigers are asking for a late-inning reliever in trade talks, believing that it's essential if they are going to make a deep run in October," Nightengale reports.
While teams around baseball might be hoping the Tigers sell, if they decide they have a real chance for a deep run this October in a wide-open American League, their target at the deadline is now known.
Detroit is seeking out bullpen help to upgrade the roster if they're buying, and there aren't a ton of great options they could end up pursuing.
Luke Weaver of the New York Mets is one option to consider, while A.J. Minter and Brooks Raley are slightly cheaper Mets relievers who could fill that same role.

Mason Miller isn't a realistic option, but the other San Diego Padres relievers, Adrian Morejon and Jason Adam, could work for the Tigers in a late-inning role as well.
Regardless of who the Tigers end up pursuing, it will be very interesting to see what they end up doing at the trade deadline this summer.
They could conduct a huge fire sale, or they could target late-inning bullpen help to pursue a deep postseason run. The jury is still out for what Scott Harris and AJ Hinch will do, but if they buy, it's now apparent they'll seek late-inning reliever help this summer.
The next week of games before the August 3 trade deadline could determine the future of the Tigers franchise. They might either be adding late-inning reliever help or parting with valuable assets like Skubal, Mize, and Torres.
