Ronald Araujo is officially a Liverpool player.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the Uruguayan has “signed his Liverpool contract”.

The Barcelona centre-back signs on a season-long loan , which reportedly contains a £47.2m option (rather than obligation) to buy.

We’re reluctant to give the powers that be at Liverpool too much praise for getting this short-term fix over the line when there’s been so much time in the window to address a clear issue.

That said, as far as short-term fixes are concerned, it’s difficult to suggest the Reds could have snapped up anyone better on such short notice.

That’s not to say we don’t have our concerns, by the way – chief of all, perhaps, being Araujo’s injury record at Barcelona.

But it’s a signing, more or less for free, that covers us centrally and at right-back . Of course, we’re still of the mind we’d like to see another body in the backline, particularly at right-back, to ensure we’re not left short if Jeremie Frimpong were to pick up an issue in the first half of the 2026/27 campaign.

How many transfers have Liverpool completed this summer?

Technically speaking, this is Liverpool’s third arrival this summer after Jeremy Jacquet (Stade Rennes) and Victor Munoz (Osasuna).

However, with the French international having agreed a deal back in the January window, this is really our second official summer deal in what has been a mostly quiet window thus far.

Mind, the Basque was already warned that he’d be inheriting something of a mess at Anfield following Arne Slot’s enforced departure at the end of the 2025/26 season.

But we’d always retained the hope, perhaps foolishly, that Liverpool’s recruitment team would at least ensure that the new man in the dugout would be handed the tools necessary to compete this term.

With one Victor Munoz secured in mid-June, and 53 days separating the signing of the Spaniard and Ronald Araujo, however, it would seem that our recruitment team have a very different view of the situation.

Which is somewhat startling when it’s pretty evident to everyone of a Liverpool association that the squad in its current form cannot be expected to compete on all fronts in 2026/27.

The fact that Araujo has been brought in, seemingly on a whim, only further evidences the near-total lack of planning around this window, as far as we’re concerned.

Harsh? Perhaps. But it’ll be Iraola who ends up paying the price either way.
