Arsenal Just Signed Bruno Guimaraes and the Premier League Odds Have Already Moved

Then they agreed a £75 million fee with Newcastle for Bruno Guimaraes and the market moved again, because of course it did. He is 27, made 195 appearances for Newcastle after joining from Lyon in 2022, and the fee reflects what a reliable ball-winner at his level actually costs in 2026. Arsenal getting him this close to the start of the season is a significant piece of window business.
The title odds before the announcement had Arsenal at roughly 6/4, Manchester City at 5/2, Liverpool at 11/2. After the Guimaraes agreement the Gunners shortened. How much depends on which platform you check and when, but the direction was not complicated. Adding a midfielder of that quality to a squad that just won the title has a predictable effect on how the market prices the defending champions’ chances.

The passing tempo out from the back, the pressing triggers, the ability to stay compact without sacrificing attack, all of it improves when the player next to Rice is capable of doing what Guimaraes does rather than being carried by him.
The Odegaard situation complicates things. Arteta’s midfield with both Guimaraes and Odegaard might be too heavily weighted for two deep-lying creative influences, and the suggestion that Odegaard could leave if the deal goes through reflects a genuine tactical question rather than just transfer noise. Arsenal’s title defence might look significantly different in terms of personnel than the title win did, which is a more interesting story than just adding a good player.
What the Rest of the Market Is Doing
Manchester City at 5/2 is interesting given they are starting life without Guardiola for the first time since 2016. Whoever takes over inherits a squad still full of quality but without the manager who made that quality function at its highest level. The market is giving City significant credit for the players they have. Whether that credit is warranted depends heavily on how the transition goes in the opening weeks.
Liverpool under Iraola, Chelsea under Xabi Alonso, Manchester United with Michael Carrick as full-time manager, half the division is operating under new or relatively new leadership heading into August. Arsenal do have Arteta now who has been the manager for the team, much longer than any other manager in an England’s top division team. Many regard him as the most settled coaching situation, with very few contenders. Guimaraes’ arrival will strengthen an already winning title squad. The Premier League odds reflect that, as they probably should.
What Happens Before August 22nd
Newcastle now need a replacement and may have to move quickly. Arsenal might make further moves. The Barcola situation at PSG, the ongoing search for attacking reinforcements at several clubs, the Odegaard question, the market will reprice several more times before the opening weekend. The title odds on September 1st when the window closes will look different to the ones available today, and the ones available in November when the table has started to mean something will look different again.
What the Guimaraes deal does is crystallise what Arsenal’s summer ambition actually is. They are not managing a title defence. They are trying to build on it. The odds, for now, agree.
