Although this is the case, it also appears that the Cubs are at least open to trading one of their veteran players with trade deadline day almost here.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Cubs have had trade discussions with teams about catcher Carson Kelly.
"Chicago is going to be creative -- with Ayers on the cusp, the Cubs have talked about Carson Kelly with teams seeking a right-handed-hitting catcher, for example -- because in a league with the Dodgers, Brewers, Braves and Phillies, walking into a postseason with clear weaknesses is doom waiting to happen," Passan wrote .
The Cubs being open to trading Kelly is notable news, as he is a solid part of their roster. However, it could also make sense for them to trade him if it means landing an upgrade on their roster elsewhere. This is especially so when noting that they have a very promising catching prospect in Owen Ayers, as Passan noted.
Kelly would have the potential to be a strong addition to a contender that is looking to improve behind the plate. The 11-year veteran is in the middle of a solid campaign with the Cubs, as he has six home runs, 37 RBI, and a .260 batting average in 80 games.
It will be interesting to see if the trade talks centering around Kelly result in him getting moved by the deadline from here.
