The 6-foot-5, 244-pound linebacker's speed is transformational. And when the pads went on for the first time this week, Styles made his presence felt.
For all of the excitement surrounding Styles, it's easy to forget that he's only been playing linebacker for two years. After beginning his career at safety, Styles moved to linebacker in 2024, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors. In 2025, Styles became a first-team All-American.
Of all the players in the 2026 NFL Draft, Styles could have a higher ceiling than any player because he still has so much room to grow. This week, Washington head coach Dan Quinn shared some advice he's given Styles.
"We're chasing hard to have absolute elite execution," Quinn said this week. "I also recognize there are gonna be mistakes, and I want them to happen when you're working right on the edge of something; you're going to make them. I encouraged Sonny just the other day: make them. I want you to test yourself to see, can I go to that space to get the ball? Can I be in that location? Can I go take my shot? I want them right on the edge, knowing that mistakes are part of it, and then when they happen, that they don't get repeated. And so, that's the execution piece."
That's terrific advice from Quinn. Styles possesses outstanding instincts, but sometimes, when you are still relatively new to a position, you sometimes don't always trust what you see. So, Quinn wants to see Styles trust those instincts now. Even if they're sometimes wrong. Everyone makes mistakes. Make those mistakes now and learn from them when the games begin.
