As the New York Yankees try to unseat the Tampa Bay Rays at the top of the AL East, they are calling up their top prospect, George Lombard Jr.
New York made the decision to call Lombard Jr. up on Monday night after the trade deadline passed and the team didn't add any other middle infielders. Lombard Jr. spent much of this year in Triple-A and was knocking on the door with strong performances on both sides of the ball.

George Lombard Jr. scouting report
Lombard Jr. is widely considered the best prospect in the Yankees system, and MLB.com has him as the 20th best prospect in all of baseball. The shortstop was a 2023 first-round pick out of high school and signed with New York instead of attending Vanderbilt for college baseball.
Lombard Jr. best skillset comes on the defense side of the ball, as the Yankees consistently mentioned that he was MLB-ready as a defensive shortstop.

The baserunning is better, as he stole 74 bases over multiple levels combined in 2024 and 2025, but he still had 26 career minor league home runs since joining the Yankees system.

He doesn't enough power to strikeout among the league-leaders, so he will need to find a way to improve his whiff percentage against the best in the league. Fortunately, he does have a decent eye and should be able to avoid an unplayable chase rate.

George Lombard Jr. Yankees role
By making this move, the Yankees are committing to Lombard as their starting shortstop in the near future and are likely to give him a long leash. Lombard is replacing Anthony Volpe on the active roster and will push Jose Caballero into a utility role, allowing him to play more at other positions.
With two months until the postseason, the Yankees hope Lombard can cement himself as the starting shortstop for not just this year, but the future as well. If Lombard struggles, New York can go back to either Caballero or Volpe at any point, but that is clearly the backup plan.
