This weekend marks the start of this year’s Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, California , as the best players from the trading card game, video games, Pokémon GO, and more compete to become the champion. As the series has grown, the event has expanded beyond a mere tournament into its own official convention, complete with special side events and, of course, exclusive merchandise. Many fans currently attending the event, however, have faced issues with long lines trying to enter the Pokémon Center store where these items are being sold, all while resellers are purchasing these exclusive items to tout in direct view of the venue itself.
In recent years, the Pokémon TCG and broader franchise have exploded in popularity, with new card sets and anything Pikachu-related struggling to stay on shelves. When the merchandise being sold at this Pokémon Center was revealed, including exclusive backpacks, plush toys, as well as restocks of hard-to-find booster packs and sets like Ascended Heroes for retail price, interest was naturally high. To counter resellers, Pokémon Company International introduced multiple policies designed to mitigate the issue, including limits on purchases per person and timed entry slots to the store to prevent overcrowding. According to fans on social media, however, this has failed to mitigate the problem.

On X (formerly Twitter), fans have been sharing posts about their attempts to get their hands on this new line of exclusive items. Timed entry slots have failed to prevent long lines, with many being unable to enter until hours after their assigned time . Meanwhile, scalpers are lining the streets near the venue in an attempt to resell the exclusive merchandise for this year’s event and restocked TCG booster packs, often above the price these items are being sold for inside the official store.
That being said, others have noted that the experience once entering the Pokémon Center is well-organized , with limits on items being enforced strictly and checkout times being quick despite long lines.
Pokémon has been the center of a storm of issues regarding reselling for many years, particularly for its trading card game ( thanks, Logan Paul! ), but to see the issue perpetuated at an event designed to celebrate the franchise shows how large the issue of reselling has become within the franchise. Hopefully, over the rest of this weekend, and moving ahead into future events, more can be done to tackle an issue that is increasingly becoming a visible concern for many simply seeking to have fun playing Pokémon with friends .
