The New York Yankees were unable to come out on the other side of the trade deadline with any significant catching upgrades like the Boston Red Sox and Miami Marlins.
However, just because the trade deadline has passed does not mean the Yankees have no hope of improving at catcher. They reportedly signed Mitch Garver to a minor league deal, but expecting him to perform may be a stretch. He has not been good this year. However, there is a veteran catcher who just opted out of a deal and has been producing in Triple-A.
Andrew Knizner opted out of his minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox on Friday, and the Yankees could make sense as a landing spot. After the addition of Adley Rutschman, it became clear that there was no real path for Knizner to the Red Sox's big-league roster. Opting out allows catcher-needy teams to take a chance on him.
He has played in 323 regular-season games and has spent all season in Triple-A. He spent some time with the Colorado Rockies Triple-A affiliate before landing in Worcester. He has a .294/.393/.552 slash line in 54 games between Triple-A Albuquerque and Worcester.

Given how back Austin Wells has been this season, it's not going to hurt the Yankees to sign him and see what he can bring. Ali Sánchez has gotten more run at catcher as of late, but at this point, anyone who could potentially help the Yankees at catcher deserves a look.
