Suffolk County police arrested three people after what they described as a street takeover involving at least 200 ATVs, dirt bikes and motorcycles.
Authorities said police received multiple 911 calls around 4:20 p.m. Saturday reporting the vehicles were driving recklessly and performing stunts on Route 347 in Hauppauge. Officers responded, arrested two people and impounded several vehicles, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Police said the group later disbanded before regrouping near Motor Parkway and Express Drive South in Brentwood. Highway Patrol and Third Precinct officers followed the group into Bay Shore, where two ATVs became disabled around 6:30 p.m. Police said the operators fled on foot. One was apprehended and found to be carrying a loaded gun.
Police identified those arrested as 23-year-old Ava Mongiello of Mount Sinai and 29-year-old Jahkil Arroyo of Central Islip. Both were charged with reckless driving, second-degree reckless endangerment and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. They were issued desk appearance tickets.
Shamir Solomon, 22, of Roosevelt, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful speed contest and reckless driving. Police said he was being held overnight at the Third Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Central Islip.
Their attorney information was not immediately available.
Police charged a 45-year-old Bronx man with murder after investigators said Jacob Freytes, an innocent bystander riding his bike, was killed in the shooting.
