Jaguars' Jourdan Lewis is back healthy after missing entire offseason
Jacksonville Jaguars veteran cornerback Jourdan Lewis is trusting the process.
After suffering a season-ending foot injury last season and missing the entire on-field portion of the offseason program, he’s back on the field for the start of training camp.
It was an odd situation for the 10-year nickelback to miss so much time away from football. But he had faith in that process as he does this one.
“It's just about trusting it. Trusting the way I break, trusting the way I process, going out there and playing,” Lewis told reporters after the fifth day of training camp . “Just getting those faculties back, getting that feel back, that instinct back and putting a consistent camp together.”

Lewis is entering his second season with the team, recording 10 pass deflections and two interceptions in his abbreviated first year. He also stood out as a voice in the locker room as he often offered his perspective on how the team was doing and what they could do better.
It was needed as the secondary of the Jaguars is one of the most inexperienced groups on the roster. But he’s seen growth from several players on the roster over the last year.
He acknowledged starting cornerback Montaric Brown ’s ascension to the top defensive back, a role he said Brown embraced even last season before receiving a contract extension from the team. He noted that Jarrian Jones has the tools to be one of the most dominant players at the position. And he continues to be impressed with second-year two-way player Travis Hunter as he stars on both sides of the ball.
“That's just a testament to our coaching, being able to go out there and teach everybody what to do and everybody else's position because that makes us a better unit as a whole,” Lewis said. “We have a lot of versatility and a lot of guys that have the aptitude to go out there and learn it and go out there and produce.”

When Lewis suffered his season-ending injury last year it was a major blow to the defense. They’d already lost Hunter to a season-ending injury and had traded away Tyson Campbell earlier in the year.
In losing Lewis, they didn’t just lose another player. They lost a leader, a voice, and a calming presence in the secondary.
His impact has already been felt through the early portion of being back on the field in training camp.
“I think we all notice when J-Lew’s out there in terms of the communication, the confidence, his ability to get everybody on the same page,” head coach Liam Coen said of the veteran corner. “He's feisty. He brings a mentality and toughness.”

That toughness is something the Jaguars are trying to breed in practice. They’ve battled against Jacksonville’s offense through the first few days of training camp. Some days the defense is clear and away better. Others, the offense gets the best of them.
But the result after each session is growth from both sides.
“We want to be the best. That's all we striving to be, the best,” Lewis said. “Being the best that we can be, which I think could be the best in the league. So, going out there and handling our business is going out there and being the best.”
The Jaguars had 31 takeaways last season, snagging 22 interceptions and recovering nine fumbles. It was part of the intentionality of the coaching staff in defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile’s first season at the helm.
That intentionality has continued during Campanile and Lewis’ second season with the team. Players are honing in on taking away the ball or making it as difficult as possible for receivers to make a play during individual drills.
It’s showing up in team work as safety Eric Murray, Jones and Hunter have all come away with interceptions. Lewis has deflected several passes and been sticky in coverage.
“We’re being coached to take the ball away. High pointing the ball, making sure that the receiver can't make a catch, make a play on the ball in the air, we're been coached to do that,” Lewis said. “Everything that you see, all the turnovers, everything that we're doing, being ball hungry, that's getting coached. And we have the talent to go out there and do it every single week, as you saw last year.”
As the Jaguars continue to move through their preseason schedule, Lewis will be a focal point on the defense.
