Prospect Traded at Deadline to Make MLB Debut After Impressive Performance

Pitcher Mason Adams, acquired by the Colorado Rockies at the trade deadline from the Chicago White Sox , didn't need much time in the minor leagues to prove he was worthy of his first MLB promotion.
Adams aced one of the harshest tests a minor leaguer can face in three starts after he went from Chicago to Colorado in an Aug. 3 trade. The right-hander only three runs and nine hits in 13 innings for Triple-A Albuquerque, which plays at a hitter-friendly altitude. In two home starts for the Isotopes, Adams allowed just one run across nine innings.
According to Thomas Harding of MLB.com on Twitter/X , Adams will start for the Rockies on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals in his major league debut.
Colorado acquired Adams and infielder Carlos Vielma in exchange for outfielder Brenton Doyle. Prior to the trade, Adams went 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA (49 innings, 21 earned runs) and 48 strikeouts in 14 games across three minor league levels.
Adams, 26, had been with Triple-A Charlotte for his previous nine outings (seven starts), going 3-3 with a 4.25 ERA (36 innings, 17 earned runs), and 36 strikeouts.

The start against the Nationals offers a satisfying conclusion to a whirlwind season for Adams, who missed the 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Adams, an Iowa native, was originally drafted by Chicago out of Jacksonville University in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He was ranked by MLB Pipeline as the White Sox’ No. 8 overall prospect prior to the trade, and No. 20 in the Rockies' system after the trade . Coincidentally, the Rockies are calling up right-handed pitcher Blake Adams to replace veteran left-hander Kyle Freeland on Monday, Aug. 24. Freeland is being placed on the 15-day injured list with a pinched nerve in his neck.
Blake Adams, 25, will debut after going 2-5 with an 8.10 ERA in 17 games (two starts) for Albuquerque this season. Between Adams and Vielma — who has a .452/.553/.548 slash line in nine Dominican Summer League games since the trade — the Rockies have to be elated with their early returns.
