Can the Detroit Tigers continue their hot streak?
\n That's the question they'll answer in the second of their three-game set against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, Aug. 12. A lefty-lefty matchup of Tigers starter Framber Valdez (7-7, 4.17 ERA) and new Guardians acquisition Foster Griffin (12-4, 3.31 ERA) highlights the game, scheduled to start at 6:40 p.m. ET and televised on Detroit SportsNet.
\n The Tigers (59-60) beat the Guardians 6-4 on Tuesday and are now one win away from reaching .500 for the first time since May 4, when they were 18-18. If the Tigers win and the Texas Rangers lose to the Los Angeles Angels , the Tigers will move into the third American League wild card spot.

\n That's a big deal for a team that was 16 games under .500 entering June.
\n Griffin could represent a tough matchup for the Tigers, however. After playing in Japan from 2023-25, he returned to MLB in 2026 and went 12-3 with a 3.06 ERA for the Washington Nationals before the Guardians acquired him at the trade deadline. Griffin struggled in his first outing with the Guardians, allowing five earned runs over four innings in a 13-6 loss to the lowly New York Mets.

\n The Tigers are 7-2 since trading lefty ace Tarik Skubal on Aug. 1, but they are showing signs of slowing down.
\n After scoring nearly nine runs per game (8.8) in a six-game stretch between July 31-Aug. 6, the Tigers are down to 4.75 runs per game over their last four, slightly higher than their season average of 4.57 runs per game. Mix in the loss of lefty slugger Riley Greene (out of Wednesday's lineup with a hamstring injury) and the prospect of facing a quality lefty starter, reasons start piling up to doubt the Tigers today.
\n Then again, the reasons to believe might overwhelm the reasons to doubt. Valdez has bounced back since his disastrous start against the Chicago Cubs on July 21, allowing four earned runs combined over 19 innings in his last three starts. He's once again looking like the ace the Tigers picked up in the offseason after back-to-back seven-inning appearances.
\n And with the Guardians offense sporting MLB's second-lowest run total since June 1 (and the Tigers having MLB's third highest), this is a game the Tigers should feel confident in winning, even if it ends up a low-scoring game.
