One of the most sought-after players expected to be available was Athletics All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers, but those plans may have been derailed after a significant injury.
According to MLB insider Jeff Passan , Langeliers suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee, an injury that could sideline him for the remainder of the 2026 season. The timing couldn’t be worse for both the Athletics and the teams that had been eyeing the star catcher as a potential trade target.

In 93 games, he slashed .263/.332/.497 while belting 23 home runs and driving in 51 RBIs, establishing himself as one of the top offensive catchers in the majors.
His value extends well beyond his bat. Langeliers has also continued to shine defensively, using one of the strongest throwing arms in baseball to throw out 11 runners on 35 stolen-base attempts this season. That combination of power and elite defense made him one of the most attractive players expected to be available before the trade deadline.

Contenders May Need to Look Elsewhere
Several playoff hopefuls had reportedly been viewed as logical landing spots for Langeliers, including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia Phillies.
Now, those clubs may be forced to pivot to other options as they look to upgrade behind the plate. Hunter Goodman of the Rockies is the other big-name catcher teams are looking at, and this Langeliers news now gives the Rockies even more bargaining power.
While it’s still possible Langeliers returns sooner than expected depending on how his treatment unfolds, the injury has dramatically altered his trade outlook. What appeared to be one of the biggest storylines leading up to the deadline has quickly turned into a disappointing setback for both the Athletics and one of the game’s premier catchers.
